Intel core i5 2400 vs. amd a8 760012/27/2022 ![]() The new APU has a configuration of 512:32:8 (Cores:Texture Mapping Units:Render Output Units) as compared to 384:24:8 for the old VLIW4 architecture inside the 50-series APUs. Like Hawaii, the GCN cores here contain improvements that reduce reliance on the limited amount of DDR3 memory available to the chip and improve tessellation performance. That many ACEs will make it easier for the GPU to handle simultaneous compute and graphics workloads, which was why AMD baked them into both this chip and the recently launched PS4. Compared to the A10-6800K, the A10-7850K has a lower CPU frequency (3.7GHz base and 3.8GHz turbo) and a wider GPU (up to 512 GPU cores, from 384) at a slower clock speed (720MHz compared to 844MHz). While it’s true that the earlier chips were built on 32nm SOI while this new Kaveri uses bulk silicon, AMD is claiming to have nearly doubled its transistor counts while holding die sizes the same. According to AMD, quad-core Piledriver and Richland APUs were 246 sq mm and 1.3 billion transistors. The new A10-7850K is a 245mm 2 die with 2.41 billion total transistors. Three more years of innovation, and we have today’s Kaveri, arguably the first APU to fully deliver the vision AMD articulated back when DirectX 9 was standard and programmable GPUs had yet to hit the market. AMD dubbed its new plan “Fusion,” and promised to ship silicon by 2008 2011. There’s not an exact equivalent to Intel, but I’d match that up against, at the most, an Intel Core-i54760 and embedded Intel HD motherboard graphics.
